profile:
▶ MATTHIAS GOERNE German baritone Matthias Goerne is one of the most versatile and internationally sought-after vocalists today and a frequent guest at renowned festivals, opera houses and concert halls. Born in Weimar, he studied with Hans-Joachim Beyer, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He has collaborated with almost all the leading conductors and orchestras in Europe, North America and Asia. He has appeared at leading international opera houses such as the Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Teatro Real, Madrid, Paris Opéra, Zurich Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, New York. His carefully chosen roles range from Pizarro (Fidelio), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Amfortas (Parsifal), Kurwenal (Tristan) and Orest (Elektra) to the title roles in Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler and Berg’s Wozzeck, most recently at the Met in March 2014. During the 2014/15 season, Matthias will be making several appearances at the Konzerthaus in Vienna. Other highlights include a tour with the Vienna Philharmonic under Daniel Harding, the premiere of a new work for baritone by Marc-André Dalbavie with the Orchestre de Paris under Paavo Järvi, concerts with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, numerous recitals with Piotr Anderszewski, Christoph Eschenbach and Leif Ove Andsnes and Schubert’s Winterreise in a film installation by South African artist William Kentridge at venues around the world, including Lincoln Center in New York. In January 2015 Matthias Goerne made his debut as Wotan (Das Rheingold) with the Hong Kong Philharmonic conducted by Jaap van Zweden. In summer 2015 he will appear at the festivals in Lucerne, Edinburgh, Verbier and Tanglewood (with the Boston Symphony Orchestra) and at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York and the Saito Kinen Festival as well as at Salzburg. Goerne’s artistry has been documented on numerous recordings, many of which have received prestigious awards, including a Grammy Award, an Echo Klassik, the German Critics Prize and an ICMA award. He recently recorded a series of selected Schubert songs for Harmonia Mundi. Matthias Goerne is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London and from 2001 to 2005 he taught at the Robert Schumann Academy in Düsseldorf as honorary professor of Lied interpretation. Current as of February 2015
